School Description and Mission Statement
|
Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School operates both regular and special
education programs for 59 boys and girls, ages 12-18, who are residents of
Trinity Youth Services – Sacramento. In addition, the school provides
special day class services to selected students from local school
districts. Excelsior is a nonpublic school certified by the California
State Department of Education Nonpublic Schools and Agencies Unit.
Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School, a division of Advanced Education Services,
is under contract with the San Juan Unified School District, Sacramento
City Unified School District, Folsom-Cordova Unified School District, and
selected educational agencies.
Excelsior’s staff-to-student ratio for adults who work directly with
children is 1 adult to every 4 students. Average class size is 12. The
overall ratio of adults to students is 1:4. Our students participate in a
full academic load during their 360-minute day (7:50 am - 2: 20 pm). Two
periods a day include remedial or supportive math and Language Arts
course. Excelsior follows the San Juan Unified School District course of
study.
The mission of Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School and Advanced Education
Services is to provide each child, family, and adult we serve with quality
educational programs so they may be empowered to lead successful and
productive lives.
We believe:
1. Every child can learn and should be given that opportunity.
2. All children can put forth their best effort to take full
advantage of their opportunities.
3. Progress in education requires mutual respect between students
and teachers.
4. Education must be a combined effort on the part of students,
teachers, family, and community.
5. Excellence is the only goal for which to strive.

Parents, other volunteers and businesses make a valuable contribution,
which increases the quality of education that our students receive.
Parents are encouraged to become involved as volunteers in the
educational program. The principal appoints parents as volunteers to
assist the school and will provide a volunteer orientation and specific
assignments for volunteers.
Businesses, through partnerships with our school, enhance and support
educational opportunities for our students. Cooperative programs which
meet the goals and objectives of the instructional program are encouraged.
As with other school personnel, volunteers must meet certain
qualifications and accept certain responsibilities that include a genuine
interest in helping students, a warm and friendly attitude, an ability to
work with others in the school, an acceptance of individual differences in
students, and an appreciation for all racial and ethnic groups.

III. School Safety and Climate for Learning
School Safety Plan
|
Date of Last Review/Update |
July 2005 |
Date Last Discussed with Staff |
October 2005 |
|
We provide our students, on a daily basis, with a safe, secure, and
welcoming environment. School safety is a top priority and our
comprehensive school safety plan addresses prevention, preparedness,
response, and recovery. Creating a safe school is a joint responsibility
of students, parents/guardians, teachers, school officials, local law
enforcement, emergency personnel, and others in the community. |
School Programs and Practices that Promote a Positive Learning Environment
|
Excelsior Knights – Knowledge is our Shield! That
is our motto and we put it into practice daily. We believe that an
outstanding instructional program leads to the most positive learning
environment; therefore, we emphasize English (I, II, III, IV), Math
(Skills, Math A/B, Algebra I & II, Geometry, Trigonometry), Science
( Earth, Life, Biology Laboratory Science), Social Studies (World
Geography, World History, US History, US Government, Economics), Computer
Literacy, Drivers Education, Health, Physical
Education , Vocational Education (Life Skills, Diversified
Occupations, Computer Operations, Video Editing, Video Graphics), and Electives
(Visual Arts, Music Appreciation, and Art Appreciation).
Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School uses scripted direct instructions to
teach many students math and reading. Corrective math and reading programs
have become a staple of the Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School curriculum. Our
students continue to see increased gains in learning which are close to
double the expected rate of student increase. Students participating in
corrective math programs improved an average of eleven months in learning
for every six months of instruction. Students participating in corrective
reading programs improved an average of nine months for every six months
of instruction.
Included in our school day are three direct instruction courses
(mathematics, reading, and writing). Students are assessed for need and
placed accordingly. They must master skills before moving into the next
level of direct instruction.
Part of our Physical Educational program is CIF basketball (boys and
girls), softball, track and field, and cross country. Students learn
teamwork, sportsmanship and responsibility. Excelsior also participates in
the La Sierra Athletic League annually. Sports in this league consist of
softball, flag football, and basketball.
The teachers of Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School continually set higher
educational standards for their students. An average of 42% of the
students at Excelsior made the honor roll during the 2004-2005 school
year. During the 2004-2005 school year, fourteen students were honored for
earning their high school diplomas at Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School. The
success of these students is what keeps us inspired. These are the
students who other students admire and will eventually follow.
The students at Excelsior are also involved and devoted to helping in
their community. Six students from Excelsior feed the homeless in
Sacrament on the first Wednesday of each month. Excelsior students also
volunteer at Harvest Festivals and fundraisers for local organizations.
Students are also active in the community during field trips to local
colleges and universities and through a variety of educational field trips
within the community.

Suspensions and Expulsions
Data reported are the number of suspensions and expulsions (i.e., the total
number of incidents that result in a suspension or expulsion). The rate of
suspensions and expulsions is the total number of incidents divided by the
school’s total enrollment for the reporting school year. For comparison, this
school’s data is compared to the aggregate data from all Advanced Education
Services’ nonpublic schools.

IV. School Facilities
Information about the safety, cleanliness, and adequacy of school facilities,
including the condition and cleanliness of the school grounds, buildings, and
restrooms. Additional information about the condition
of the school's facilities may be obtained by speaking with the school director.
|
AES- Excelsior Jr./Sr. High School’s school grounds, buildings, and
restrooms are maintained in accordance with the highest standards
established by Advanced Education Services and are inspected daily to
ensure those high standards are maintained. On-site maintenance personnel
and daily custodial service ensure the safety, cleanliness, and adequacy
of school facilities. School safety programs for all staff, documented
safety inspections, safety meetings, contracted fire equipment maintenance
service, a fire warning system, announced and unannounced fire and
earthquake drills, and local fire authority inspections all ensure a safe
and clean school facility. |
School Facility Conditions – Results of Inspection and Evaluation
Data reported are the determination of good repair as documented in a
completed Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) evaluation instrument, including
the school site inspection date, the CQI evaluation instrument completion date,
and the date of any remedial action taken or planned. Additional information
about the condition of the school's facilities may be obtained by speaking with

V. Academic Data
Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR)
Through the California Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) program,
students in grades 2 through 11 are tested annually in various subject areas.
Currently, the STAR program includes California Standards Tests (CST) and a
norm-referenced test (NRT). The CST tests English-language arts and mathematics
in grades 2 through 11, science in grades 5, 9, 10, and 11, and history-social
science in grades 8, 10, and 11. Prior to 2005, the NRT tested reading/language
arts and mathematics in grades 2 through 11, spelling in grades 2 through 8, and
science in grades 9 through 11. Beginning in 2005, the NRT tests
reading/language arts, spelling, and mathematics in grades 3 and 7 only, and no
longer tests science in any grade.
California Standards Tests (CST)
The California Standards Tests (CST) show how well students are doing in
relation to the state content standards. Student scores are reported as
performance levels. The five performance levels are Advanced (exceeds state
standards), Proficient (meets state standards), Basic (approaching state
standards), Below Basic (below state standards), and Far Below Basic (well below
state standards). Students scoring at the Proficient or Advanced level meet
state standards in that content area. Students scoring at the Proficient or
Advanced level meet state standards in that content area. Students with
significant cognitive disabilities who are unable to take the CST are tested
using the California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA). Detailed
information regarding CST and CAPA results for each grade and proficiency level
can be found at the California Department of Education Web site at http://star.cde.ca.gov
or by speaking with the school principal. Note: To protect student privacy,
scores are not shown when the number of students tested is 10 or less.

Board of Education, are reported as the percent of tested students scoring at or
above the 50th percentile (the national average). School results are compared to
results at the district and state levels. Beginning in 2005, the NRT tests
reading/language arts, spelling, and mathematics in grades 3 and 7 only and no
longer tests science in any grade. Detailed information regarding results for
each grade level can be found at the California Department of Education Web site

Academic Performance Index
The Academic Performance Index (API) is a score on a scale of 200 to
1000 that annually measures the academic performance and progress of individual
schools in California. On an interim basis, the state has set 800 as the API
score that schools should strive to meet.
Growth Targets: The annual growth target for a school is 5 percent of the
distance between its API Base and 800. The growth target for a school at or
above 800 is to remain at or above 800. Actual growth is the number of API
points a school gained between its base and growth years. Schools that reach
their annual targets are eligible for awards.
Subgroup APIs and Targets: In addition to a school wide API, schools also
receive API scores for each numerically significant subgroup in the school
(i.e., racial/ethnic subgroups and socio-economically disadvantaged students).
Growth targets, equal to 80 percent of the school’s target, are also set for
each of the subgroups. Each subgroup must also meet its target for the school to
be eligible for awards.
Percent Tested: To be eligible for awards, elementary and middle schools
must test at least 95 percent of their students in grades 2 through 8, and high
schools must test at least 90 percent of their students in grades 9 through 11
on STAR assessments.
Statewide Rank: Schools receiving an API Base score are ranked in ten
categories of equal size (deciles) from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), according to
type of school (elementary, middle, or high school).
Similar Schools Rank: Schools also receive a ranking that compares that
school to 100 other schools with similar demographic characteristics. Each set
of 100 schools is ranked by API score from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) to
indicate how well the school performed compared to schools most like it.
API criteria are subject to change as new legislation is enacted into law.
Detailed information about the API and the Public Schools Accountability Act
(PSAA) can be found at the CDE Web site at http://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/ac/ap/
or by speaking with the school principal.
